OBAMA FOR USA
President Obama spent his last day on a Martha's Vineyard vacation buying ice cream treats at a general store and a cookie at a nearby deli.
Obama and his daughters took a quick Sunday morning trip to Alley's General Store. Wearing a Chicago White Sox baseball cap and jeans, the president made an unscheduled stop at the small village just up the street from his rented Chilmark farm. The jaunt was one of the few times reporters have seen the president in public with his daughters.
Obama made small talk with patrons before buying candy and ice cream.
"Hope you guys are having a good time," Obama told one customer as cameras clicked and the floor underfoot creaked.
The total at the first store was $4.99. He handed the clerk a $20 bill and declined the change.
He walked across the parking lot to a deli. There, a clerk suggested he try a fresh cookie.
"You know, I think a cookie sounds about right," said Obama, who is normally known for his healthy eating. Obama was accompanied by both of his daughters and his niece, Suhaila Ng.
At that store, Gracia's Bakery and Deli, he made pleasantries with the staff and posed for a picture.
"You're going to be a freshman this year?" Obama asked the clerk who charged him for his baked goods. "That's exciting."
The Obamas plan to leave Martha's Vineyard later Sunday for Washington. They plan to spend a few days later this week at the presidential retreat at Camp David, Maryland.
